Thinking out loud about all things IMC

Get your Masters

with 6 comments

I have to say on the second week of my new job, I realize just how valuable my Masters in  IMC from West Virginia University has been to me.  Already I have used not only the knowledge gained from the program and professors, but from my fellow students as well.  Having a number of scalable solutions to draw upon beyond my personal experience has been priceless.

Sitting on the fence about getting your Masters?  Go for it.

Now for the shameless self-promotion:  If you are looking at an MBA, take a look at Gannon’s programs.  You can specialize in specific areas, work full-time while you are getting you degree and receive your Masters from a prestigious University with the reputation for the highest quality.

  1. Hi Beth. I am currently pursuing an M.A. in public relations at Kent State University in Ohio. I will be presenting to my PR Measurement class about IMC and was wondering if you’d be interested in giving your thoughts on how IMC and PR are related. Do you have time this week to chat about IMC?

    • I’m pretty well booked this week, but this is my philosophy:

“PR is the Sun, Advertising is the Wind” – Reis, Al & Laura Ries (2002) The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR. New York: Harper Collins Publishers.

This is an easy, breezy book to read that says it best. PR, done well, is the best tool to roll out new prooducts and and new and re-branding campaigns because of it’s inherent ability to reach vast target markets and establish credibility. Advertising then does the heavy lifting of delivering key messages consistently and serving the reminder function. Both tools are of equal importance to be executed strategically in an IMC plan, along with research, direct response, emerging media (PR & advertising), creative strategy, audience analysis, competitive postitioning, etc.

In my experience, IMC programs that lead with PR are the most economical because they reduce the amount of money required for advertising, encourage great WOM (Word of Mouth) and produces measurable results.

  2. Thanks for the response! Do you mind if I quote some of this information? More specifically the final paragraph?

Good luck with all of your work, projects and meetings this week!

  3. Thanks for the advice regarding a Master’s Degree. I am currently graduating with my Bachelor’s and have been back and forth about the decision to further my business degree. I have heard, more recently than ever, that a Master’s in invaluable and is actually becoming standard for new entry employees in the business field. I feel that now would be the time to continue that education. Thanks again,

    Katie
